Q1 January-March: Top 5 monthly actions
Below are suggested actions you might plan for in Q1 January-March aligned to the Checklist on Pages 34-35 of Businesses: actions to help pollinators.
*January
- Plant/restore a native hedgerow (Action 7). Use the companion management How-to-guide Native hedgerows for pollinators. N.B. This action can be delivered any time between November-January.
- No physical footprint? Plan to sponsor locally: Review the ‘Recommended sponsorship activities’ table and identify local community sponsor recipient (Action 24). REMEMBER Sowing/sponsoring wildflower seed mixes is NOT a biodiversity action.
- Appoint a Biodiversity Champion and/or a Green Team (Action 29).
- Plan thematic places for pollinators as the understanding of your site increases such as: a Biodiversity Walking Trail (Page 32) and include your Car Park for pollinators (Page 31).
- Plan marketing and communication actions: align your biodiversity communication actions to the monthly AIPP Key Campaigns and Messages 2025 (Actions 23, 26, 27 & 28). Issue the AIPP monthly newsletter to employees and suppliers. Follow the AIPP on X @pollinatorplan and Instagram @allirelandpollinatorplan.
*February
- Plant native pollinator-friendly trees and shrubs (Action 8). This action can be delivered from November-February. OR plant a 5-tree Heritage fruit orchard (Action 9) from October-March.
- No physical footprint? Plan to sponsor locally: Review the ‘Recommended sponsorship activities’ table and identify local community sponsor recipient (Action 24). REMEMBER Sowing/sponsoring wildflower seed mixes is NOT a biodiversity action.
- Prepare your Biodiversity Champion(s), Green Team and employees for monitoring with the free online bumblebee course. Invite them to the March START for the intermediate level (but doable) Bumblebee Monitoring Scheme (Action 21).
- Plan thematic places for pollinators – As the understanding of your site increases plan thematic places for pollinators such as a sensory, herb, moon or rain garden (or planters).
- Plan marketing and communications actions – Organise a ‘Lunch & Learn’ webinar on pollinators-biodiversity with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan (AIPP). Align your biodiversity communication actions to the monthly AIPP Key Campaigns and Messages 2025 (Action 27 & 28).
*March
- Plant specific ornamental trees and shrubs (Actions 9-13) selected from the Top Ten pollinator-friendly plants for different situations.
- Discuss a plan (~15 April-end September) for reduced mowing and lift the cuttings with supplier contractors: Facilities Managers, Landscapers and Grounds Maintenance contractors. Checklist (Page 34-35) of Businesses: actions to help pollinators (Action 23).
- No physical footprint? Invite business neighbours to join you on the biodiversity journey by exploring Business Parks for pollinators and Ecological Corridors.
- Prepare your Biodiversity Champion(s), Green Team and employees for monitoring with the free online bumblebee course. Invite them to the April START for Flower Insect Timed Counts (Action 22) – entry level/no experience necessary (Friday FIT Counts).
- Plan marketing and communications actions – Plan a pollinator-biodiversity employee volunteer day aligned to your sponsorship.
Align Comms with Pesticide Action Week | PAN Europe circa 20-30 March annually.
