The National Biodiversity Data Centre is delighted to release an update of ‘Local Communities: Actions to Help Pollinators’.
This free guideline provides simple, evidence-based recommendations for community groups on how to help pollinators and biodiversity. The guidelines are now also available in Irish, thanks to funding from the Tidy Towns Local Authority Pollinator Award steering group.
Building on the recommendations in the previous guidelines, the new guidelines include up to date advice on what pollinators need and how to support them based on the latest scientific evidence. Communities can choose from 24 actions across themes such as meadows, nesting habitat, and pesticide elimination. The guideline also includes a new voluntary scoring system to help communities track their progress.

“We’re delighted to launch a new guideline for local communities. We know that groups all over the island of Ireland are already doing excellent work to tackle the biodiversity crisis. Some are even leading the way in trialling methods of meadow management and finding pesticide alternatives.
Pollinators are still in decline, but our data shows that local populations are increasing where actions are taken to help them. This proves that what we are doing is working. Much of that success is down to the hard work of local communities, through their own work programmes, in collaboration with their local authorities, and in pursuit of schemes like the Tidy Towns Pollinator Award.
We hope these updated guidelines will help communities of all sizes choose the right actions for pollinators, and that new groups will be inspired to join the effort to create a landscape where pollinators can survive and thrive.”

Áirítear comhairle atá suas chun dáta faoina dteastaíonn ó phailneoirí agus faoin tslí le tacú leo, bunaithe ar na moltaí sna treoirlínte roimhe seo, sna moltaí nua atá bunaithe ar chomhairle eolaíochta suas chun dáta. Tá cuid díobh ar thús cadhnaíochta, fiú, agus modhanna bainistithe móinéar á dtástáil acu agus leaganacha malartacha lotnaidicídí á lorg acu.
Tá pailneoirí fós ag dul i meath, ach taispeántar sna sonraí atá againn go bhfuil pobail áitiúla ag dul i méid san áit a bhfuil gníomhartha á gcur i bhfeidhm chun cabhrú leo. Cruthaíonn sé sin go bhfuil á dhéanamh againn ag oibriú. Tá cuid mhaith den rath sin bunaithe ar obair chrua na bpobal áitiúil, trína gcláir oibre féin, i gcomhpháirt lena n-údaráis áitiúla, agus iad ag cur i gcrích scéimeanna cosúil le Gradam Pailneora na mBailte Slachtmhara.
