New resource: Managing healthcare sites for pollinators

The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is delighted to release a new free resource: Pollinator-friendly management of healthcare sites, developed with the support of the HSE.

Biodiversity and human health

Biodiversity and human health are closely linked. A growing body of research reveals that natural environments have a huge impact on human health and wellbeing. Pollinators are at the heart of healthy environments, and wild bees are responsible for pollinating many of the fruit and vegetables that support a nutritious diet.

On the island of Ireland, more than three quarters of our wild plants are pollinated by insects. These plants sustain all other biodiversity, as well as providing carbon sequestration and flood mitigation services, not to mention the joy and health benefits of places where we can connect with nature.

Studies show that spending time in nature can have a positive impact on our physical and mental health. Diverse natural environments are particularly important, bringing more mental health benefits than those with low natural diversity.

Managing healthcare sites for pollinators

Taking steps to improve biodiversity on healthcare sites can contribute to patient and staff wellbeing, and in some cases may even aid patient recovery. From mowing less in certain areas, to creating a biodiversity garden or walking trail, or planting or protecting native trees and hedgerows, there are many ways healthcare sites can help pollinators and people.

The new guide includes a list of detailed actions to suit all types of healthcare site no matter the size or amount of green space. It also features case studies and tips from Peamount Healthcare in Dublin, Dalriada Hospital in Antrim, and the Mental Health Green Gyms project in Belfast run by the Conservation Volunteers (Northern Ireland).

A huge thank you to the HSE for supporting this resource, and to Bamber McKay, the Northern Health & Social Care Trust, Brian Gaynor, Sian Doherty, Peamount Healthcare, and the Conservation Volunteers (Northern Ireland) for helping with its development.
